Abstract

Class 120(3) Fancy yarn is produced by intermittently abrading a bundle of continuous filaments during its passage to a bulking, turbulent, fluid zone so that those filaments which have been cut by contact with the abrading mechanism are formed within the zone into neps or short slubs. In one process, a bondle of untwisted filaments of varying denier is withdrawn as a balloon from a rotating package and the filaments twisted thereby pass through nip rollers thence to a take-up package: a traverse mechanism moves an abrasive rod, e.g. of carborundum, into intermittent contact with a secondary balloon formed between two guide eyes above the main balloon. In other processes, a guide ring is provided in part with an abrasive surface or an abrasively surfaced guide is moved into and out of contact with the filaments.
