Abstract

The invention comprises aromatic amino compounds of the general formula <FORM:0883297/IV (b)/1> in which R is hydrogen or an alkyl or aryl group, X is a hydroxy or methoxy group, and X1 is hydrogen or a halogen, nitro, alkyl, or alkoxy substituent group. Examples of amines of this formula are 3-amino-4-hydroxy-phenylsulphonyl urea, N(3 - amino - 4 - hydroxy - 5 - nitro - phenylsulphonyl)-N1-methyl urea, N(3-amino-4-hydroxy-phenylsulphonyl)-N1-phenyl urea, N(3-hydroxy - 4 - amino - 6 - chloro - phenylsulphonyl)-N1-ethylurea, and N(3,6-dimethoxy-4-amino-phenylsulphonyl)-N1-ethyl urea. Compounds of this formula may be obtained by condensing a compound R-NCO with a sulphonamide of formula <FORM:0883297/IV (b)/2> where R is alkyl or aryl, X is hydroxy or methoxy, X1 is hydrogen, halogen, nitro, alkyl, or alkoxy and Y is acyl, and then hydrolysing the NHY group with a strong mineral acid or strong mineral base. Alternatively, a compound of formula R-NCO may be condensed with a sulphonamide of formula <FORM:0883297/IV (b)/3> where X1 is hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, or alkoxy and the product is treated with a reducing agent such as sodium sulphide to convert the nitro group into an amino group. The compounds of the invention may also be obtained by condensing a compound of formula R-NCO with a sulphonamide of formula <FORM:0883297/IV (b)/4> and treating the product with a strong mineral base to hydrolyse the oxazolone ring with formation of -OH and -NH2 groups. The amines of the invention may be diazotised and converted into azo dyestuffs and metal complexes of such dyestuffs.
