Abstract
The invention comprises compounds of the general formula (I) <FORM:1003788/C2/1> (wherein R represents a hydrogen atom or a C1- 4 alkyl group) and their preparation by (a) condensing a compound of the formula (II) <FORM:1003788/C2/2> (wherein R1 represents an alkyl group) with urea or thiourea, replacing the sulphur atom (when present) by oxygen and removing the acetyl group by hydrolysis, or (b) nitrating a compound of the formula (III) <FORM:1003788/C2/3> and reducing the nitro group to an amino group The sulphur atom may be replaced by treating the condensation product with hydrogen peroxide or chloracetic acid. The starting materials of formula (II) are prepared by condensing p-acetamidobenzyl cyanide with an ester of a C1- 5 alkanoic acid and alkylating the product. The compounds of the invention are active against certain viruses.
