Abstract

The invention comprises dyes of formula <FORM:0896602/IV (c)/1> where R is an alkyl, aralkyl or aryl group and A is a phenolic or enolic coupling component residue, with OH vicinal to the azo link and R and A are free from groups imparting solubility in water. The dyes are made by usual diazotisation and coupling processes. Indicated coupling components are 2-naphthol, 1-aryl-3-alkyl-, -aryl- or -carboxylic acid ester-5-pyrazolones, o-hydroxyaryl-carboxylic acid arylides, b -ketocarboxylic acid arylides, benzoylacetone and indanedione. The dyes have yellow to red or bluish-red tints. Examples are provided of the preparation of the dyes in which R is illustrated as a methyl, phenyl and benzyl group.
