Procedure for the preparation of monoazo dyes soluble in water, which in free acid form correspond to the general formula (1) **(See formula)** wherein the benzene nucleus A may additionally contain alcohol, haloalkoxy and/or alkoxy groups with 1 to 4 carbon atoms, halogen atoms, aralkoyl, aryl, aryloxy, alkylamino, arylamino, acylamino and/or nitro groups and/or the 2-benzothiazolyl radical, which may be substituted by groups of alcohol sulfonic acid and/or isulfonic acid, R means the hydroxyl group, an alkoxy group with 1 to 4 carbon atoms, an amino or alcohol group or the hydrazino radical, the benzene nucleus C may additionally contain one or two chlorine atoms and/or lower alcohol and/or alkoxy groups with 1 to 4 carbon atoms, m and n represent numbers from 0 to 2, the sum of m and n being at least 1, and X represents a grouping of the formula **(See formula)** in which Y represents the hydroxyl group or a radical capable of being separated in an alkaline medium, characterized in that amines of the general formula are diazotized (4) **(See formula)** in which A, m and n have the meanings indicated above, it is coupled with a pyrazolone derivative of the general formula (5) **(See formula)** in which the radicals R and X have the meanings indicated above, and the benzene nucleus C can be substituted as described above, and optionally the dyes obtained from the aforementioned formula (1), in which Y represents the grouping of the formula **(See formula)** -CH2-CH2-OH are then transformed according to methods known per se into dyes of the formula (1) with the group -SO2-CH2-CH2-Y, in which Y means an organic or inorganic radical capable of being separated in alkaline medium.
