Procedure to prepare monoazo dyes soluble in water, containing one or two sulfonic acid groups and having the general formula: ** (See formula) ** where X represents hydrogen, chlorine, bromine, cyano, methylsulfonyl, carboxy, carboalkoxy, carbamoyl, or N-substituted carbamoyl; Y represents hydrogen, chlorine, bromine, nitro, cyano, methylsulfonyl, phenylsulfonyl, methyl, methoxy, phenylazo, carboxy, carboalkoxy, carbamoyl, carbamoyl, N-substituted acetyl, benzoyl, sulfoamoyl, sulfamoyl, sulfonic acid ester or acid sulfonic; R1 represents hydrogen, hydroxyl, cyano or an optionally substituted alkyl, aralkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or heterocyclic radical or a radical of formula -COOR4, -COR4 or -CONR4R5 where R4 and R5 independently represent hydrogen or an alkyl, aralkyl radical, cycloalkyl, aryl or heterocyclic, optionally substituted; R2 represents an optionally substituted alkyl, aralkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or heterocyclic radical and R3 represents hydrogen or an optionally substituted alkyl, aralkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or heterocyclic radical; characterized in that it comprises diazotizing an aromatic amine of the formula: ** (See formula) ** in which X and Y are defined as above and couple the thus obtained diazo compound with a coupling component of formula ** (See formula) ** wherein R1, R2 and R3 are defined as above, the amine and the coupling component together containing one or two sulfonic acid groups.
