Procedure for obtaining water soluble azo dyes, of general formula: ** (See formula) ** wherein A represents the residue of a diazo component of the benzene or naphthalene series; E represents the residue of a coupling component of the series arylamine, naitol, phenol, 5-pyrazolone, 5-aminopyrazole or acylacetylarylamide; X represents = N-, (see formula) or (see formula); Y represents chlorine or bromine; Q1 represents -O-. -S- or -NR4- where R4 represents hydrogen or lower alkyl; Q2 represents a direct bond, -O-, -S-, -CO, -SO2-, -SO2NH, -NHSO2-, -CONH-, -NHCO-, -COO-, -OCO-, -OSO2- O -NR5 - where R5 represents hydrogen or lower alkyl; R1 represents an arylan radical; R2 represents an optionally substituted alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl, or aryl radical such that R1 and R2 together contain from 14 to 18 carbon atoms; R3 represents hydrogen or lower alkyl; and n is an integer monomer having a value from 1 to 3; characterized in that it comprises diazotizing an aromatic amine of the benzene or naphthalene series and coupling the thus obtained diazo compound with a coupling component of the series arylamine, naphthol, phenol, 5-pyrazolone, 5-aminopyrazole or acylacetylarylamide, together containing the amine and the coupling component n sulfonic acid groups and a group of the formula: ** (See formula) ** To form a formula dye: ** (See formula) ** in which it is then reacted with a compound of the formula: R2-Q2-R1-Q1-H where n, X, Y, A, E, R3, R1, R2, Q1 and Q2 are defined as above.
