Abstract
<PICT:0883202/III/1> In the manufacture of sodium carbonate by calcination of sodium bicarbonate, particulate bicarbonate is entrained in a gas stream which includes carbon dioxide, or carbon dioxide and steam produced in the calcining operation and has been preheated to above 500 DEG C. and the gas stream containing the entrained bicarbonate is passed through a reactor in which calcination takes place. Bicarbonate crystals are fed from screen 1 through feeder 2 into calcining tube 3 at restricted throat 3a. Gas, preheated to at least 700 DEG C., passes into tube 3 from f, and picks up, and carries, the bicarbonate up the tube, and round the inverted-U 4 into cyclone separator 5. Separated soda is discharged at 11 at about 120 DEG C. and passed to packing, while the gases containing CO2 and H2O are drawn off by pump 6. Part of these gases passes through a to storage 7 and part is recycled through b, and superheater 9 to pipe f. Fuel is fed through e into combustion chamber 10 of the superheater and part of the resulting gases may be recycled through c, fan 8 and d. The steam may be removed from the CO2 gases by condensation if desired.
