Abstract
A hydrated alkaline earth hydroxide is continuously fed into fibre gases at 649 degrees - 1316 degrees C arising from combustion of coal and/or oil and cont. fine fly ash particles and S cpds. and reacted for 0.1-5 secs. within the above temp range. The hydroxide is pref. slaked lime with av. particle size 1 mu. produced by continuously reacting quicklime and water under pressure adjacent to the fuel burning plant and continuously forcing a jet of the product into the flue gases. Reaction of the lime with SO2 in the flue gas is extremely rapid and the SO2 is almost completely removed by addition of little more than the stoichiometric amount. Props. of the flu ash recovered from the gas by usual methods are strongly improved, making it an excellent material for foundations surfacing of roads, etc.
