883,196. Nuclear fuel elements. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. June 17, 1960 [July 6, 1959], No. 23103/59. Class 39(4) In a nuclear fuel element comprising fuel segments 1 arranged end to end in a sheath 2, 3, lengthwise movement of the fuel in the sheath is obstructed by a restraint member 8 between an end of the fuel and the end of the sheath, the restraint member being of limited strength so that it will fail in compression without stretching the sheath beyond its elastic limit. Tubular fuel segments 1 of enriched uranium and breeder tube 4 of natural uranium are enclosed by an inner vanadium sheath 2 and an outer niobium sheath 3. The restraint member 8 is a niobium tube having longitudinal slots 9. Specification 778,881 is referred to.
