Abstract

883,135. Engine stop-gear. C.A.V. Ltd. March 2, 1960 [March 11, 1959], No. 8421/59. Class 122 (4). A safety device to prevent reverse rotation of a compression-ignition internal-combustion engine supplied with fuel by a pump 9 controlled by a suction governor comprising a spring-loaded diaphragm 7 connected to the pump output control member 8 and dividing a chamber 4 into two separate compartments 5, 6, one, 5, of which is connected to a point in the engine air-intake system, comprises a valve 15 which, during normal operation of the engine, connects the other compartment 6 to atmosphere but also communicates with a further point in the intake system and is operable in the event of the engine starting to rotate in the reverse direction, thereby causing a positive pressure in the intake system, to close the communication to atmosphere and connect the compartment 6 to the intake system to thus move the diaphragm so that it shuts off the supply of fuel to the engine. The valve 15 (Fig. 2), comprises an inlet 16a connected to the compartment 6 and an outlet 16f connected to the air manifold 13 which, during normal engine running, is at a higher pressure than the point in the intake system to which the pipe 11 from the compartment 5 is connected. During normal running of the engine a diaphragm 18 in the valve 15 is held by the vacuum in the manifold 13 against a seating 16e and the compartment 6 is open to atmosphere through a filter 17 and an outlet 16d, the member 8 then being controlled by the suction in the air inlet pipe 12 in the known manner. If the engine starts to rotate in the reverse direction the consequential positive pressure in the air manifold 13 moves the diaphragm away from the seating 16e and against a seating 16g, thus closing the outlet 16d and opening the compartment 6 through a groove 16i, a hole in the diaphragm, and a passage 16h to the positive pressure in the manifold. The diaphragm 7 is thereby moved to the left to interrupt the supply of fuel to the engine. In a modification of the valve, Fig. 3 (not shown), the seating 16e is omitted and a spring-loaded non-return ball valve contacts a seating in the outlet 16f.
