Abstract

882,818. Actuation of switches. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. March 3, 1958 [Dec. 3, 1956], No. 36927/56. Class 38 (5). [Also in Group XXXII] A dashpot for incorporation in an automatic reclosing circuit-breaker such as is described in Specifications 882,816 and 882,817, comprises a pair of pistons 3, 4 which are coupled through crank mechanism 7-12 and shafts 13, 14 for simultaneous movement in opposite directions in cylinders 1, 2 from positions 3<SP>1</SP>, 4<SP>1</SP> in which the contacts of the breaker are closed, to positions 3<SP>11</SP>, 4<SP>11</SP> in which they are open. Piston 4 is provided with a bore which cooperates with a tapered plug 30 to progressively clamp upward movement of the piston, and a valve closure member 26 which allows substantially undamped downward movement of the piston. Piston 3 comprises an open-ended sleeve which moves freely in cylinder 1 over most of its range of movement, but which engages a spring-loaded disc 20 when at the top of the cylinder. The disc has a bore 21 co-operating with a tapered plug 19 to progressively increase the damping action at the end of the upward stroke of piston 3.
