Abstract

882,805. Drill-jigs. STEPHENS, J. W. Feb. 22, 1960 [Feb. 24, 1959], No. 6334/59. Class 83 (3). A drill-jig for drilling holes in the corner of a hexagonal or like workpiece 8 comprises an expendable drill guide 1, Fig. 3, having components fitting surfaces 9, and drill entry and exit surfaces 11 normal to the drilling axis. A battery of such guides removably secured together with adhesive may be used on a holder 13b, Fig. 4, secured to a jaw 4 of a vice, the work being clamped between the jaw 3 and the holder. The holder 13b comprises a plate 13, a vee-shaped bar 14 terminating in a slot 17 through which a guide 1 is fed by a slide 18, Fig. 2, actuated by a toggle 19, 20, to engage the work 8. A drill-plate 44, secured to the bar 14 has holes 45 of different sizes, and may be reversible on the bar to bring the required hole over the corner of the work. The battery of guides is located in a cartridge 16, Fig. 1, releasably secured to the plate 13 by a bayonet-joint fastening 37, 38, and the guides are spring-urged towards the slot 17 by a spring 31, Fig. 5, on a rod 28, which urges a slide 27 against the guides, the slide being held in its outermost position by a spring-catch 32, and the guides being held in the cartridge by a pivotable catch 35. The cartridge is located parallel with the bar 14, so that the guides are aligned with the slot 17, by an extension 40, Fig. 1, on the cartridge, engaging a recess 41 in a raised portion 13a of the plate 13, and a spring 42 on the plate. An adjustable work stop 47, Fig. 4, is secured to the bar 14, and a stop 50 for limiting the movement of jaw 3, engages the bar 14. In operation, the holder 13b is secured to the jaw 4 of the vice, and a battery of guides is mounted on the plate 13. The work is located in the vee 14a of the bar 14, the stop 47 adjusted to the required position, and the jaw 3 moved inwardly to engage the work by the vee 8b. The handle 23 of the toggle is moved clockwise, thus moving the first guide 1a into the slot 17 to engage the work, and a hole is drilled. The jaw 3 is released, and the work removed, and due to the slide 18 being spring- urged by a spring 26 in the lever 20, the guide 1a is ejected, thus allowing the next guide to enter the slot 17. The guides may be formed as an integral bar, and may be held against the work magnetically, and the vice jaw 3 may have a holder similar to the one on jaw 4, for drilling holes in opposite corners of the work. The holder has a cover 51 secured thereto for protection of the working parts.
