Abstract

882,725. Tar sprayer. AVIATION, MINISTER OF. Feb. 5, 1959 [Nov. 5, 1957], No. 34472/57. Class 107. In apparatus for spraying tar on to a road or like surface the quantity sprayed is varied in accordance with the speed of the vehicle on which the apparatus is carried. Heated tar is pumped from a storage tank via pipe 8 to spraying bars 4, 5 and 6, arranged in series in an elongated S form, by a pump driven from the vehicles' engine. A return circuit to the tank via pipe 9 maintains the tar in circulation when the sprayer is shut off. Each bar is supplied with a series of nozzles 13 controlled by valves 14 and the valves of each bar are operated by arms 15 attached to a central bar 17 which slides transverse of the vehicle under the control of an hydraulically operated ram 18. The control bar 17 associated with spray bar 4, which is the first bar brought into operation and the last to cease operation, closes a valve 20 in pipe 9 when it is moved to open its spraying valves whereby the tar pressure builds up in the spraying bars. This spray bar 4 is brought into operation by manual control of its associated ram 18 and as the speed of the vehicle increases the tar pressure builds up until at a predetermined pressure a tar pressure operated device (Fig. 3 not shown) operates a spring loaded rack and pinion mechanism (Fig. 4, not shown) which operates a valve arranged in the fluid circuit of the hydraulically operated ram 18 attached to the control bar 17 of the second spray bar 5. The bar 5 is thereby brought into operation. If the vehicle speed and hence the tar pressure further increases the third spray bar 6 is brought into operation by a second tar pressure operated device and rack and pinion mechanism. The temperature of the tar is maintained by jacketing the tar feed pipes and spraying bars and circulating hot air through the jackets via pipes 10, 11 and 12. Specification 706,035 is referred to.
