Abstract

882,480. Turbine rotors. ESCHER WYSS A.G. July 24, 1958 [Sept. 18, 1957], No. 23868/58. Class 110 (3). In a turbine rotor formed of discs welded together, the discs are provided with central apertures so that some of the seams may be afterworked from both inside and outside of the rotor. The rotor is composed of discs 1 to 4 carrying blades 12 to 15, each disc having an annular shoulder on each side, the neighbouring shoulders between the discs being connected by welded seams 7-9, the shoulders 1<SP>1</SP> and 4<SP>11</SP> , at the upstream end and the downstream end of the rotor respectively, being connected by weld seams 6 and 10 to the shaft sections 5 and 11 respectively, each disc having a central aperture of a diameter at least 30% of the outside diameter of the rotors, the apertures forming a central cavity by means of which those weld seams exposed to the highest operating temperatures may be afterworked from the inside. The shaft section 5 is provided with apertures 25 through which passes a cooling medium such as, in the case of a gasturbine rotor, either working fluid leaving the compressor, or working fluid leaving a heatexchanger subsequent to the compressor, this cooling medium flowing into the rotor cavity and emerging through apertures 26, 27, provided in the downstream shoulders of certain discs, the medium rejoining the working fluid after passing through labyrinth packing 22, 23 provided between the shoulders and the stator blades 19, 20.
