700,859. Elastic-fluid turbines. WIGG, R. E., FIELDEN, G. B. R., and RUSTON & HQRNSBY, Ltd. Dec. 28, 1951 [Nov. 1, 1950], No. 26663/50. Class 110 (3) An axial-flow gas turbine wherein the constituent parts are so arranged that by removal, addition or substitution of rotor discs, stator casing rings, segmental shroud rings or/and rows of rotor and stator blading, the axial spacing of rotor and stator blade rows, the number of stages or/and the radial width and conicity of the turbine annulus can be altered. The rotor 3 comprises blade-carrying discs 5 which are arranged in pairs with corresponding serrated recesses 13 to receive the .blades 14; each pair of discs being separated by spacing discs 6. The discs 5, 6 are clamped between flanged hub members 8, the members 5, 6, 8 being interconnected by dowels 10, 11, 12. The stator casing comprises inter-engaging hollow ring-shaped elements 16 and spacer rings 17 which are bolted together so as to clamp the stator blades 20 therebetween as shown. The blades 14, as well as the blades 20, are circumferentially spaced by dummy blade roots. The stator blade roots 20a and their spacers are formed with recesses to receive the tongues 24 of shroud-rings 23 and are locked in position by studs 29 acting on packing strips 28. Cooling air is circulated through the ring- shaped elements 16 and spacers 25 between the shroud rings and the stator casing. Clearances exist between various members, to accommodate expansion, details of which are given.
