Abstract

882,453. Counter-balancing apparatus. SWAN HUNTER & WIGHAM RICHARDSON Ltd., and WILSON, G. July 28, 1960 [July 22, 1959], No. 25204/59. Class 78 (2). [Also in Group XVII] A platform 2 for receiving a pallet on which are to be stacked bricks or other goods and for maintaining the upper layer of bricks of the stack at a predetermined level, is mounted on an air spring comprising an air - filled cylinder 7 slidable in a liquid-filled cylinder 30 and provided with a disc valve 22 which allows unrestricted passage of liquid therethrough as the platform descends under loading but restricts the return of the liquid, and thereby controls the rate of upward movement of the platform, when the pallet is removed by a fork-lift truck. The cylinder 30 is sunk in the ground so that the platform 2 is a suitable distance from the ground when unloaded and just above the ground when fully loaded. When not in use the air cylinder 7 and platform 2 can be removed and the liquid cylinder 30 covered by a plate (not shown). The Specification sets out optimum dimensions for the apparatus.
