Abstract

Nylon fabric or fibre is treated by a process wherein the fabric or fibre is exposed at an ambient temperature of at least 400 DEG F for a sufficient time to permit stretching by at least 5%, coated with a liquid containing a high molecular weight polymer and dried while maintaining it at constant length. The fabric or fibre may be exposed to a temperature of 400 DEG F.-500 DEG F. for 5-600 seconds, stretched by 6-10 per cent under 2-6 lbs tension, and dipped under low tension in an aqueous system containing dispersed butyl rubber and a thermosetting water-soluble resin. The butyl rubber may contain at least 0.5% by weight of combined halogen but may not contain more than 3 atoms of combined halogen per double bond. The high molecular weight polymer may also be isobutyleneisoprene butyl rubber or natural rubber. The thermosetting resin may be the reaction product of a phenolic compound, e.g. phenol, cresols, phloroglucinol, xylenols, trimethylphenols, mono- or di-chlorophenols, diamyl or di-isopropylphenols, p-tertiarybutyl phenols, p-phenylphenol, p - octylphenol, hydroquinone, resorcinol or orcinol, with an aldehyde, e.g. furfural, formaldehyde, paraformaldehyde or acetaldehyde. The fabric or fibre may be first dipped in the thermosetting resin and subsequently in the rubber cement or latex. Specification 565,974 is referred to.
