Abstract

A condensation product soluble in an organic solvent and capable of being rendered insoluble and infusible by the addition of heat is prepared by adding formaldehyde to a heated solution of aniline in alcohol acidified with phthalic acid. The resin which separates out insoluble in benzene, acetone, and benzene-alcohol and the solution may be used for impregnating or otherwise treating filling materials paper, or fabrics. Known contact substances may be employed. In an example formaldehyde is added to a heated solution of aniline, phthalic acid and zinc chloride in alcohol. The resin which separates out is dissolved in a benzene-alcohol mixture and dried with magnesium sulphate. A filling material such as asbestos, wool-meal, paper, or fabric may be impregnated with the solution. The impregnated materials have electrical insulating properties. Specification 290,327, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], is referred to.
