Abstract

881,319. Brushes. OSBORN MANUFACTURING CO. May 11, 1960, No. 16641/60. Class 19. In a method of making a brush a length of brush strip having an elongated back with a layer of brush material extending therefrom is formed and a layer of uncured elastomeric material is included substantially coextensive therewith, the brush strip assembly being enclosed and heated first to soften and intrude the elastomeric material into the brush material and then to cure the elastomeric material. As shown in Fig. 1, a layer of bristles 4 with a band 5 of elastomeric material thereon is layed transversely to a metal strip 1 having punched teeth 2, 3 and a wire 6 is placed on the band 5 so that when the strip 1 is formed into a channel the teeth 2, 3 overlie the wire 6 which secures the band 5 and the bristle layer 4 in place. A length of brush strip so formed may be helically wound on a mandrel 7, Fig. 2, and clamped between plates 8 and 9. A shaped steel band 11 may then be wound closely about the brush face and the assembly placed in an oven. Alternatively, the brush strip may be cut and formed into annular sections 14, Fig. 3, which may be stacked around a mandrel 12 attached to a base plate 13. Metal discs 16 are placed between the brush sections and an end disc 17 is pressed down to compact the stack and secured. A split cylindrical shell 19, 20 may be clamped about the assembly which is subsequently placed in an oven. The brush material, e.g. wire preferably has a Knoop hardness in excess of 600. The elastomeric material may be rubber, or neoprene having a blower which on heating produces a spongy layer which is more easily erodable than the bristles. The elastomeric material may have an abrasive embedded therein. A number of elsatomeric materials and abrasives are described. Specifications 637,322, 645,407 655,262, 839,777, 839,778 and U.S.A. Specification 2,091,995 are referred to.
