Abstract
880,846. Centrifugal governors. PLESSEY CO. Ltd. July 4, 1960 [July 15, 1959], No. 24342/59. Class 57. [Also in Group XXIX] In a centrifugal governor comprising a valve 9 loaded by a spring 10 to seat on one end of a radial passage 7 containing liquid under pressure in a rotary shaft 3 and unseated by centrifugal force at a predetermined speed to allow some of the liquid in the passage to spill away, the spring 10 is of hair-pin type comprising two shanks joined by a bent portion 13 and so arranged that the ends of the spring lie on opposite sides of a plane containing the shaft axis. The spring is connected at one end to a block 14 carrying the valve 9 and at the other to a base 12 secured to the shaft diametrically opposite the valve. The shaft 3 is the driven gear shaft of a combustion engine fuel pump 1, the passage 7 communicating via a bore 4 with the pump delivery chamber so that the effective output of the pump to the engine is controlled by the valve 9 which, above the governed speed, by-passes pumped fuel to the fuel tank. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, two springs 10a, 10b are arranged transversely of the shaft. A helical hair-pin spring or springs may be used.
