Abstract

The engine is driven by the main fuel pump drive shaft and carries centrifugal governor weights which act upon the end face of the governor sleeve. The main shaft is also connected to a distributor type fuel pump at its opposite end. Centrifugal displacement of the weights causes the sleeve to act upon a governor arm. Two springs are attached to the arm, one is under initial compression the other is a tension spring. At a predetermined engine speed the weights overcome the initial compressive force in the spring and place the second spring under a tension loading. The tension spring is attached to an arm which turns a fuel metering valve which then reduces the supply of fuel to the high pressure fuel pump and reduces the speed of the engine. A second connection to the metering valve leads to an advance retard mechanism which gives radial movement to the outer fuel pump cam ring and thus either retards or advances the point of the beginning of fuel injection.
