Abstract

880,664. Filling containers. MEISSNER, F. O., and MEISSNER, O.A.M., [trading as MEISSNER KOHN, JOSEF.]. Dec. 21, 1959 [Dec. 20, 1958], No. 43387/59. Class 21. [Also in Groups XVIII and XXI] In a process for filling a container 1 with a predetermined amount of liquid phosphorus 2 the container is first filled with a covering liquid 3 e.g. of water having an electrical conductivity differing from that of the liquid phosphorus and then an electrode carrier 4 is introduced into the container and adjusted so that the terminals 52, 53 of two mutually insulated electrodes are located at the correct predetermined depth. While the electrode terminals 52, 53 are immersed in water a relay 50 in a circuit 5 including a direct current source 51 is energised and a switch 500 is actuated to operate a pump 60 which delivers liquid phosphorus free from air, from a storage container, not shown, through a pipe 6 to the container 1. Immediately the contacts 52, 53 are bridged by the rising liquid phosphorus the amplitude of the current in the circuit 5 is modified, or the circuit is broken, so that the relay 50 is de-energised and the pump 60 is switched off. The carrier 4, which has at least one electrode terminal 52 projecting slightly below its lower edge is adjustably mounted on a guide 40 having a scale, not shown. In a modification. Fig. 2 (not shown), the circuit 5 comprises a single electrode which is connected to one pole of the direct current source 51 the other pole being connected to the container. The Specification also describes a method of allowing the liquid phosphorus to solidify without cavitation.
