Abstract

880,607. Ink-ribbon. GRAPHIC TECHNOLOGY Ltd. (Algamatic). Nov. 27, 1958, No. 38230/58. Class 100(4) An ink-ribbon feeding arrangement for a typewriter, tabulating or like machine comprises an independent electric motor which is automatically reversed when either spool is full, and forms part of a separate ribbon guiding attachment for mounting on the machine adjacent the platen. The drive shaft 19 from the motor, carries a pinion 23 in constant mesh with a pinion 24 journalled in a yoke 25 which may swing so that either a gear wheel 32 or a gear wheel 38, driving takeup spool shafts 30, 31 respectively, is engaged. At the same time a braking action is given to the supply spool by rotating it in a direction opposite to that determined by the winding action of the ribbon. As shown in Fig. 2 spool 26 is taking up the ribbon by the drive to gear wheel 32. A second gear 35, Fig. 5, frictionally coupled to gear 32 is also rotated and is in mesh with a gear 39 on the supply spool shaft 31 and tends to turn it counterclockwise against pull of ribbon. The tension on the frictional coupling is adjustable by screw 37 and spring 36. When the supply spool is exhausted a button 45 engages a guide 44 to pivot a rocker arm 43 which operates a toggle switch to reverse the direction of rotation of the driving motor. The feeding arrangement may be in the form of an attachment comprising a bar with detachable end parts by which the arrangement is mounted on a machine. The ribbon is trained across and back along the printing line so copy may be positioned between the runs.
