Abstract

880,533. Determining distance and attitude of objects; photographic cameras. AUSTRALIA, COMMONWEALTH OF. Dec. 12, 1957 [Dec. 24, 1956], No. 41891/59. Divided out of 880,534. Classes 97(1) and 98(1). Means for determining distance and attitude of objects includes a pair of lens systems with solid angle fields of view in excess of 180 degrees, the systems being spaced apart by a given distance and facing in opposite directions to provide said fields with an overlapping zone from which a cross-reference on objects in the zone can be obtained. As shown in Fig. 1, two cameras 25, 27 with oppositely directed wide angle lens systems 26, 28 as described in Specification 880,534 are mounted on a camera pod 24 at one end of an aircraft wing. Each lens system 26, 28 covers a field of view of 210 degrees so that there is a full overlap of 30 degrees whereby an object within this full overlap is photographed by the two cameras and can then be cross-referenced for distance measurement if the length of the base line 31 is known. If the aircraft's position is known, the orientation of the object with respect to known reference axes can also be determined. In an alternative form, the two camera lenses are mounted so as to point upwardly and downwardly respectively. Two pairs of oppositely directed camera lenses may be employed, the two lenses of each pair being arranged on secondary base lines which intersect a main base line at a known distance apart.
