880,461. Reactor control rods. BOFORS A B. Jan. 19, 1960, No. 1977/60. Class 39(4) A safety rod 13 is fastened to a cylinder 11 which is open at the bottom to the tank of a liquid-cooled and moderated reactor and can slide on a piston 6; the piston 6 is supported by a fixed hollow rod 4 which communicates with a distributer, with the space above the piston, and with a chamber 19. An electromagnet normally holds a dome 16 to close the chamber 19, and holds the piston and safety rod up; the distributer normally supplies lowpressure fluid to the piston rod 4. When the safety rod is to be dropped the magnet power is cut off and the rod and the dome 16 are released so that the interior of the piston rod communicates with the reactor tank through chamber 19 and a passage 10. The throttling effect of apertures 17, accentuated by a tapered part 14 of the cylinder, decelerates the safety rod near the end of its travel. The rod is raised by restoring the magnet power and supplying high-pressure fluid through the distributer.
