Abstract

880,459. Semi-conductor devices. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Aug. 12, 1960 [Aug. 17, 1959], No. 28013/59. Class 37. The Figures show steps in the manufacture of a superconducting switching element. Initially, Fig. 1a, parallel strips 2 of niobium are evaporated on to a single crystal 1 of silicon carbide acting as a heat-conducting insulator. A layer 3 of silicon monoxide is then evaporated to cover the middle of the niobium strips. Next (Fig. 1c) a single strip 4 of tantalum is evaporated on to layer 3. Fig. 1d shows a further layer 5 of silicon monoxide over conductor 4. Finally (Fig. 1e), parallel strips 6 are evaporated on to layer 5 to join the ends of strips 1, thus forming a control solenoid encircling gate conductor 4. The silicon carbide crystal may be replaced by mica; the niobium by lead, vanadium or tantalum, and the tantalum by tin indium or vanadium, but the transition temperature of the control solenoid should be higher than that of the gate wire.
