A motor vehicle roof rack detachably mountable on the vehicle roof comprises a framework having main side members 1, Figs. 1 and 2, end member 2, transverse bracing members 3 and retaining rails 4, 5, of which the rails 4 are connected by posts 6 to -the members 1, one or more foldable seats being attached to the framework and which when folded constitute at least part of a luggage supporting surface. Each seat has a pair of front legs 11 pivoted to a member 3 by sleeves 17 and by pivots 15 to a seat portion 10, having wooden slats 10A. The portion 10 is connected by pivots 13 to struts 12 also pivoted at 14 to seat rear legs 9, the latter being pivoted to a member 3 through sleeves 18 and shoulders 19. A pin 16 at each side of the rear of the portion 10 is engageable against the rear of the legs 9 when erected. Wooden blocks 25, 26 are provided between the legs 9. The rack is also provided with reinforcement plates 7, 8. In another embodiment the legs at each side of a seat are crossed and pivoted together, the seat back being connected to the seat through toggle levers. The ends of the rear legs are pivoted to a rack framework bracing member and the ends of the front legs engage another bracing member through clips. An apertured bracket on one front leg is engageable by a spring-urged plunger carried in a housing on a bracket carried by a side member of the roof rack.
