Abstract

Sodium chloride is removed from aqueous caustic soda solution by osmosis employing as the membrane a synthetic resin in gel form swellable but insoluble in aqueous and alkaline media which resin contains polar groups; the opposite side of the membrane is in contact with water or a weaker pure caustic soda solution. Resins referred to are condensation products of phenol or phenol sulphonic acid with aldhehydes and polar groups referred to are sulphonic acid, hydroxyl and carboxylic acid groups. The artificial resins may be reinforced by inert synthetic resins or by asbestos or glass. According to an example, a phenol sulphonic acid is dissolved in a formaldehyde solution and the resulting solution employed to impregnate a polyvinyl chloride fabric, after which condensation is effected at 85 DEG C. in an atmosphere saturated with water vapour or by passage over steam heated rolls. The membrane is employed to purify industrial caustic soda.
