Abstract

In the generation of a gas, for the preservation of food products described in U.S.A. Specification 2,490,951, containing N2, H2, CO, CO2, C2H2 and "unsaturates" in a combustion chamber provided with a refractory lining and a fuel burner, hydrocarbon fuel gas and air are supplied to the burner in weight proportion air:fuel, 81-92% air and 19-8% fuel so that the air is insufficient for complete combustion, the amount of gaseous product is controlled, so that for each cu. ft. of gas per hr. there is 1.35-1.65 sq. ins. exposed lining surface, and 3.6-4.4 cu. ins. of chamber free space per sq. in. exposed lining surface, and the refractory lining is cooled to maintain the temperature at 1800-2300 DEG F. Fuel gas may be natural gas, propane, or butane, and the refractory lining may be silica.
