Abstract

The invention comprises disperse monoazo dyes of formula:-<FORM:0879263/IV(c)/1> where A is the residue of an aromatic monoazo compound, free from SO3H and COOH groups, and derived from a benzenic diazo component R and R1 are H, Hlg or Alk, X is Hlg and -COCRR1X is attached to a C atom of residue A. The dyes are made by conventional processes of diazotization and coupling. Indicated for R and R1 are Me, Et, Cl and Br and for X are Cl and Br. Representative of specified diazo components are 2-chloro- 4-nitroaniline, 4-anilinesulphonamide, 4-anilineb -hydroxyethyl-sulphone, 4-amino-o -chloroacetophenone and 4amino-o , o -dibromoacetophenone. Representative of specified coupling components are pcresol, N, N- b -dihydroxyethylaniline, N-ethylN- b -cyanoethylaniline, N-ethyl- N-carbomethoxymethyl-m-toluidine, N, N-di-(b -acetoxyethyl)- m-toluidine, 4-hydroxya -chloropropiophenone, 4-chloroacetyl- 1-naphthylamine and 6-chloroacetyl- 2-naphthol. A preferred class of dyes are of formula:- <FORM:0879263/IV(c)/2> where R, R1 and X are as above, Z and Z1 are alkyl radicals which may be substituted and Y and Y1 may be substituted other than by COOH and SO3H groups. Specified substituents for Y and Y1 are Me, Cl, Br, CF3, CH3 CO NH, MeO and MeSO2. The dyes are applied to textiles as an aqueous dispersion. Cotton, wool, silk, acetate rayon, cellulose triacetate and polyamide textile materials are mentioned. Yellow, orange, red and violet shades are obtained. Examples are provided of the preparation of the dyes and their use in colouring textiles. In the Provisional Specification R and R1 are H, Hlg, CN, COR11, COB, COOR11 or substituted or unsubstituted alkyl or aryl residues where B is aryl and R11 is alkyl.
