Abstract

878,832. Electrically-heated expansion devices. ASAKAWA, G., and VERNET, S. Jan. 7, 1958, No. 645/58. Class 39(3). [Also in Groups XIII, XXVI and XXXVI] A device such as a valve or switch is operated by the movement of a piston 6, urged out of a cylinder 4 by the thermal expansion of a body of material 3 heated by an electric current which passes (between a rod 16 and the cylinder 4 as shown) through the body. The material 3 is wax, polyethylene, polytetrafluoroethylene, dibromobenzene, paraffin, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride or silicone gum having dispersed therein electrically-conducting particles of metal, carbon black, graphite, silicon, silicon carbide or a sulphide of lead, iron or molybdenum. The polythene may include an antioxidant such as p-benzyloxyphenol. A particular mix for material 3 contains 40% each of polyethylene and carbon black and 20% polytetrafluoroethylene. As shown there is rubber insulation 20 and a returning spring 23. The piston 6 may be insulated from the cylinder 4. In other embodiments, Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown), there is no rod 16 and an electrical connection is made to the piston 6 while the other connection is to the closed end of the cylinder 4 remote from the piston. To prevent short-circuiting of the material 3, between the piston and cylinder, the cylinder. is lined with a ceramic coating except on the closed end and in Fig. 2 this coating extends between the cylinder and a separate end closure.
