Abstract

878,476. Variable resistors. WITTLAKE, K. H. June 29, 1959 [June 30, 1958], No. 22234/59. Class 37. An element for a variable resistor comprises a transversely crimped strip of resistance material of non-uniform width. As shown, a strip 50 of oxidized metal is crimped about cooling fins 53 and spacers 54, 55 of glass or asbestos fibre. A body 56 of phenolic resin loaded with glass fibre or silicone resin loaded with asbestos is cast around the crimped strip 50. Alternatively, a ceramic body may be used. The component is given a non-linear law by machining the lower surface 10b of the body 56 whilst the component is connected to an instrument and a battery. Fig. 2 (not shown) relates to a resistor having a reciprocating sliding contact.
