Abstract

878,436. Nuclear power plant. SULZER FRERES S.A. Feb. 25, 1960 [March 31, 1959], No. 6685/60. Class 39(4). In a gas-cooled reactor of a power plant changes in the reactor load are effected without excessive changes in the gas temperature. As shown, the reactor 1 is supplied with carbon dioxide gas from compressors 2-5 through the heat exchangers 31-34, which produce steam for turbo-generators. If, with compressors 2-4 in operation, it is required to raise the load on 1, the compressor 5 is brought into circuit. The small, secondary valve 24 is opened and the compressor started. Initially, gas flows from the supply pipe 19 through 24 and the compressor. As the compressor speed rises the back flow is reduced and the main valve 14 is opened. Thus, as 24 is not closed during the first stages of the operation, the temperature of carbon dioxide is not raised by the compressor and the reactor is not subjected to a flow of high temperature gas when 14 is opened. In addition, the hot gas would be followed by very cool gas from the heat exchanger 34 and this is also prevented. Instead of changing the compressor speed, the flow may be controlled by adjustment of the compressor vanes.
