878,143. Colour television; electroluminescent screens. NIPPON ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. July 14, 1960 [Aug. 6, 1959], No. 24539/60. Class 39(1). A colour television picture tube has a screen comprising a transparent electrode 5, a phosphor layer 6 which is adapted for effecting colour variations in response to frequencies of an alternating electric field, a layer 7 of a substance whose impedance varies with electron bombardment and a metallic film 8 penetratable by the electron beam. Alternating current of the frequency to stimulate the relevant colour is applied for a frame period whilst the screen is scanned by a beam modulated in the required intensity of that colour, and the frequency is then changed to that of the next colour for the next frame period and so on in colour frame sequence.
