Abstract
Thiocarbonyl difluoride or a mixture of thiocarbonyl difluoride and a thioacyl fluoride of formula: <FORM:0877834/IV (a)/1> (where X and Y are hydrogen, halogen, a monovalent hydrocarbon radical or a halogenated hydrocarbon radical) at -80 DEG -10 DEG C., in an inert solvent, using as catalyst 0,1-10% mole (based on the monomer) of an alkoxide of formula M(OR)n (where M is aluminium or titanium, n is an integer equal to the valence of M and R is an alkyl radical) which is soluble in diethyl ether. Specified thioacyl fluorides are chlorofluorothioacetyl fluoride (preferred), difluorothioacetyl fluoride, trifluorothioacetyl fluoride, pentafluorothiopropionyl fluoride, chlorodifluorothioacetyl fluoride, pentafluorothio-3-butenoyl fluoride and 1, 1-difluorothiopropionyl fluoride. Specified catalysts are tetraisopropyl titanate (preferred), aluminium t-butoxide, triisopropyl aluminate, tetra-(2-ethylhexyl) titanate, tetra-n-butyl titanate, tetraisobutyl titanate, tetracyclopentyl titanate, tetra-2, 2-dimethyl-propyl titanate, tetra-n-nonyl titanate and mixtures thereof. Specified solvents are isopentane, pentane, cyclopentane, n-hexane, 2, 2, 4-trimethylpentane, methylcyclohexane, iso-octane, toluene, m-xylene, cumene, methylene chloride, ethyl chloride, cyclohexylchloride, n-octyl-chloride, chloroform, trimethylenechloride, m-dichlorobenzene, chlorobenzene, m-chlorotoluene, methyl ethyl ether, diethyl ether, isopropyl ether, di-n-amylether, tetrahydropyran, 1, 3-dioxane, tetrahydrofuran, anisole, phenetole and mixtures thereof. The polymer may be separated from the solution by adding a non-solvent, e.g. water or (preferably) methanol.
