Abstract

Polyethylene having a molecular weight distribution of less than 10/1 may be prepared by contacting ethylene at 20 DEG to 135 DEG C. with a catalyst solution prepared by adding vanadium oxytrichloride to an aluminium compound of formula RaAlCl(3-a) in which R is an alkyl group containing 2 to 8 carbon atoms and a is 1 or 2, the molar ratio of the aluminium compound to the vanadium oxytrichloride being at least 20:1 and both compounds being in solution in an inert liquid organic medium. The aluminium compound may be ethyl, n-propyl, isopropyl, n-butyl, isobutyl, isoamyl, n-hexyl or 2-ethylhexyl aluminium dichloride; or diethyl, ethyl-propyl, diisopropyl, diisobutyl, diheptyl or diisooctyl aluminium chloride. Specified liquid media which may also serve as polymerization media are pentane, n-hexane, cyclohexane, n-heptane, n-octane, benzene, toluene, methylene chloride and mixtures of cyclohexane with chloroform and chlorobenzene. Polymerization may be effected in the presence of hydrogen, the reaction may be terminated by the addition of an alcohol and the product purified by washing with alcoholic hydrochloric acid.
