Abstract

A catalytic mixture for the polymerization of olefins comprises zinc or aluminium metal, 0.09 to 10 molecular proportions for each atomic proportion of such metal of titanium halide or titanium alkoxide wherein each alkoxide group contains from 1 to 18 carbon atoms, and not more than 2 molecular proportions of aluminium halide for each atomic proportion of such metal. Specifications 471,590, [Group IV], 713,081, 742,642, [both in Group IV (b)], 799,392, 799,823, 801,031 and German Specification 874,215 are referred to.ALSO:Normally gaseous alpha-olefins are polymerized, in the absence of an alkyl halide, in the presence of a catalytic mixture comprising zinc or aluminium metal, 0.09 to 10 molecular proportions for each atomic proportion of such metal of titanium halide or titanium alkoxide wherein each alkoxide group contains from 1 to 18 carbon atoms, and not more than 2 molecular proportions of aluminium halide for each atomic proportion of such metal. Specified olefines are ethylene, propylene, p-butylene, isobutylene, 1-pentene, 1-decene and mixtures thereof. The process may take place in the absence or presence of a solvent such as pentane, hexane, heptane, octane, isooctane, cyclohexane, methyl cyclohexane, tetrahydro or decahydro - naphthalene, benzene, toluene, xylene, chlorobenzene, chloronaphthalene, orthodichlorobenzene, ethyl benzene, isopropyl or n-propyl, benzene, ethyl toluene, diethyl benzenes and mono and dialkyl naphthalenes.
