Abstract

A catalyst for the polymerization of monomeric epoxy compounds comprises a metal polyhydric alcohol compound formed by reacting a polyhydric alcohol and an aluminium or magnesium alkyl, aryl, alkoxide or aroxide or halide of such metal compound. The epoxy compounds are those having the formula: <FORM:0870418/IV (a)/1> where R is a hydrocarbon or substituted hydrocarbon radical or hydrogen or both R's may form a substituted or unsubstituted cycloaliphatic ring. Specified compounds are ethylene, propylene, styrene and cyclohexene oxides, epichlorhydrin, and phenyl, tolyl, chlorophenyl and naphthyl glycidyl ethers. Examples of catalysts are the reaction products of ethylene glycol and aluminium triethyl, of ethylene glycol and aluminium isopropoxide, and of ethyl magnesium bromide and ethylene glycol. They may be used on a solid support, e.g. aluminium isopropoxide heated with alumina and ethylene glycol added to the melt. In p general they may be prepared as described in Specification 731,216. A co-catalyst may be added, e.g. metal halides such as zinc chloride. Solvents may be used in the reaction, which may be effected at temperatures of 0 DEG to 300 DEG C. The polymer may be freed from catalyst by decomposing the catalyst with alcohol, washing with dil. HCl, washing with water and extracting with benzene. The examples describe the polymerization of ethylene oxide to products having molecular weights of up to 763,000.ALSO:A catalyst for the polymerization of monomeric epoxy compounds (see Group IV(a)) comprises a metal polyhydric alcohol compound formed by reacting a polyhydric alcohol and an aluminium or magnesium alkyl, aryl, alkoxide or aroxide or a halide of such metal compound. A co-catalyst may be added, e.g. a metal halide such as zinc chloride. Examples of catalysts are the reaction products of ethylene glycol and aluminium isopropoxide, of ethylene glycol and aluminium triethyl, and of ethyl magnesium bromide and ethylene glycol. They may be used on a solid support, e.g. aluminium isopropoxide may be heated with alumina and ethylene glycol added to the melt. In general they may be prepared as described in Specification 731,216.
