877,807. Parametric amplifiers. MULLARD Ltd. June 3, 1960, No. 19763/60. Class 40 (9). A parametric amplifier comprises two resonant waveguides coupled at a junction thereof to a resonant coaxial line circuit, said junction forming part of each resonant circuit and including a voltage-dependent reactor, each circuit having an independently adjustable tuning device. Fig. 1 illustrates the waveguides A, B which are tuned by probes F, G to support standing waves of the idler and pump frequency respectively, the short-circuiting plungers H, J being adjusted so that no idler frequency energy flows into the pump branch and vice versa. The diode E, operating as a voltage-dependent reactor is shown more clearly in Fig. 2 which also shows the coaxial cable K, tuned to the signal frequency by the plunger L and coupled to the waveguides via a choke R which prevents idler or pump frequency power entering the coaxial cable. One terminal of the diode is connected to the inner conductor, and the other terminal to the wall of the waveguide via a bias battery O. Signal input and output to and from the coaxial line is provided by probes P and Q.
