[Also in Group XXVI] A swing, for babies or small children, is provided with a windable spring whose unwinding is controlled by ratchet means which intermittently transmit motion to the swing seat. As shown, a preferably sheet metal swing frame 11 has a canopy and supporting legs pivoted so that they can be swung parallel for storage. Plates 25, 35 are secured within the canopy and have sockets 29, 38 to receive a shaft 30 which extends out through end wall 17 and has a cranked end carrying a handle. Journalled on shaft 30 are the end walls 45, 46 of a cradle 44 to which are rigidly secured pusher arms 55 having hooks 64 to engage the upper part of a seat 66 whose front is suspended by chains from cradle 44, their ends engaging portions 57 of arms 55. An upper ratchet plate 71 is urged by a spring 73, at one position of cradle 44, into engagement with a ratchet wheel 70 secured rigidly to shaft 30. A lower spring biased pivoted ratchet plate 80 engages wheel 70 when it is disengaged from plate 71. Secured to wheel 70 there is one end of a tubular portion 85 mounted at its other end by a sleeve 87 on shaft 30. One end of a coil spring 90 is secured to cradle 44 and has turns 90a which engage portion 85 when the spring is wound up and larger turns 90b which encircle portion 85, the end of the spring being secured thereto. The portion 91 of plate 80 is knocked by the teeth of wheel 70 on rapid movement thereof so that its other end engages the ratchet teeth and thereby prevents undesired slipping or unwinding of spring 90. In a modification, Figs. 9, 10 (not shown) the ratchet plates are gravity actuated.
