A spring 14 supporting the vertically - movable platform of a device for supporting a stack of articles with the top at a constant level, is prevented from deflecting laterally by plates 20, 22 threaded on the spring at 24, 26 and tracking against fixed uprights 42. Slots 30, 36, one of which may be omitted, enable the plates to overlap as the spring compresses. The housing 10 may be circular or oval, in which cases the plates would be fixed against rotation relative to the spring and would engage the sides of the housing without the interposition of uprights 42.
