Abstract
877,352. Furnace electrodes. CONRADTY, E. K., CONRADTY, P., and CONRADTY, C. March 25, 1959 [July 25, 1958; Oct. 4, 1958], No. 10387/59. Class 39(3). A method of securing against loosening of screw nipple joints in carbon or graphite electrodes for electric furnaces comprises forming recesses in the surface of the screw nipple and in the inner surfaces of the threaded sockets in the electrodes, and forcing a self-hardening cementing material under pressure into the open spaces formed by said recesses between the screw nipple and the threaded sockets, whereby rotation of the screw nipple relative to the sockets is prevented. In the embodiment shown cylindrical depressions d are provided in the end faces of a nipple c and in the bottoms of sockets in the electrodes a and b. A selfhardening cementing material such as synthetic resin or waterglass, to which metals or metallic carbides and a gas-emitting agent such as ammonium bi-carbonate may be added, is forced through bores e provided in the electrodes to form a plate f with projections engaging the depressions d. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown), the depressions d are hemispherical and the nipple c is provided with an axial bore so that the cementing material can be forced through the bore e in electrode a while air escapes through the bore e in the electrode b. In a further alternative embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown) longitudinal grooves are formed in the thread of the nipple and in the threads of the sockets, and the depressions d may then be omitted. 'In all embodiments the bores e may be omitted by applying the cementing material to the bottom of the socket in electrode b and to the upper surface of the nipple c and then screwing the parts together.
