Abstract
876,793. Centrifugal separators. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Jan. 2, 1946 [Sept. 20, 1944], No.203/46. Class 23. In a separator for separating gases and comprising a rotor 4 mounted on a shaft 5, impellers 20, 21 rotating with the shaft serve to discharge the heavy and light fractions respectively. Gases to be separated are supplied through a bore in the upper part of the shaft, and pass through holes 12 into the rotor. The light fraction passes from the rotor through holes 15 to the bore and is discharged by the impeller 21 through an outlet 34. The heavy fraction passes from the rotor through an annulus between the shaft 5 and a shaft 8 to be discharged by the impeller 20 through an outlet 33. The rotor and shaft 5 are supported by bearings 7, 9, 40, 41 and a thrust bearing 23 and are driven by a belt engaging a pulley 16. In Fig 4 gases from reservoirs 37, 38 are fed respectively to separators A, D. The heavy and light fractions from the separator A are respectively fed to separator B and returned to the reservoir 37 whilst the heavy and light fractions from separator D are respectively returned to the reservoir 38 and fed to the separator C. The heavy and light fractions from the separator B are fed to the separators C, A respectively whilst the light and heavy fractions from the separator C are fed to the separator B and returned to the reservoir 38. End product may be drawn from the return line to the reservoir 37 whilst waste may be withdrawn from the return line to the reservoir 38.
