Abstract

876,596. Making roller bearing shells. SCHAEFFLER, W., and SCHAEFFLER, G., [trading as INDUSTRIEWERK SCHAEFFLER O. H. G.]. Feb. 20, 1958 [Feb. 20, 1957], No. 5624/58. Classes 83 (2). In a process of making a shell for a needle roller bearing, the shell having axial openings with a width over the middle portion smaller than the diameter of the needles and a width over the end portions greater than the diameter of the needles, the middle portion of a tubular element having a wall thickness about half the diameter of the needles is radially inwardly offset e.g. by rolling, Fig. 2 (not shown), so that the outer surface coincides with the pitch circle of the needles, openings with a middle portion of reduced width are stamped out, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), and the lateral surfaces of the remaining webs are bevelled as at 10, Fig. 5, by externally acting punch means e.g. a punch 9 so that when assembled the needles will be located on the pitch circle. In a modification the openings having a constant width greater than the diameter of the needles are stamped out from a tubular element, Fig. 6 (not shown), and then either simultaneously or separately the middle portion of the remaining webs are radially inwardly offset as before and the lateral surfaces of the webs are bevelled by means of externally acting punch means to provide a seating for the needles as before. When the offsetting and bevelling are done simultaneously the width of the punch is greater than the width of the opening. In another modification, Fig. 7, shell openings 13 are stamped out of a tube with a width equal to the needle diameter throughout the length of the opening, the end portions being calibrated by a punch 14 which tapers over its whole length, Fig. 8 (not shown), and which simultaneously forms the inclined surface 15. The openings may be stamped in the tube before or after the middle portion of the shell is offset. If the openings are stamped out before offsetting, the offsetting and bevelling of the webs may be carried out simultaneously, the punch having a width greater than the width of the openings. In this case a mandrel 17, Fig. 9, coacts with the punch 14.
