Abstract
876,472. Electron multipliers. BENDIX CORPORATION. April 29, 1960 [May 7, 1959], No. 15205/60. Class 39(1). In an electron multiplier having a cathode 10 and means for creating crossed electrostatic and magnetic fields for accelerating electrons through a region near a secondary-electronemissive surface 20 towards a collector electrode 30, at least one baffle plate 29 is placed within the envelope, closely surrounding the region of travel of the secondary electrons, to block particle or photon flow outside this region and thereby reduce spurious signals. As shown, secondary-emissive surface 20, e.g. of tin oxide or a carbon compound, has a high resistance and is arranged parallel to, and “ inch from, a further resistive layer 18, potentials of 1500, -1500, 0 and -3000 volts being applied to silver terminals 22, 24, 26, 28 respectively. The resistive layers 18, 20 are formed on glass plates 14, 16. A magnetic field of 300 Gauss is provided by polepieces 36. The baffle plate 29 may be of stainless steel or a synthetic resin. Further similar baffle plates may be provided at each end of the plates 14, 16.
