Abstract

The invention comprises dyes of formula:- <FORM:0876000/IV(c)/1> where a and b may contain halogen, alkyl or alkoxy groups and R is the residue of an arylamide of an aromatic or heterocyclic #s-hydroxycarboxylic acid or acylacetic acid free from groups imparting solubility in water. The dyes are made by coupling appropriate m-aminoazo compounds with the required arylamides. Coupling may be effected in substance, on the fibre or on another substratum. Representative of indicated coupling components are arylamides of 2-naphthol- 3-carboxylic acid and its 6-substituted derivatives, 5, 6, 7, 8-tetrahydro- 2-naphthol- 3-carboxylic acid, 2-hydroxyanthracene- 3-carboxylic acid, 2-hydroxycarbazole- 3-carboxylic acid, 3-hydroxydiphenylene oxide 2-carboxylic acid, aceto- and benzoyl-acetic-acids and terephthaloyl-bis-acetic acid. The dyes colour fibres of aromatic polyesters, acetyl cellulose, triacetyl cellulose, polyamides, wool, silk and vegetable fibres, e.g. regenerated cellulose. The dyes may be used to colour plastic masses, films and lakes. Examples are provided of the preparation of the dyes and their use in colouring processes, various colours being obtained.
