A method of rooting the column a of an hydraulic press to the bore of the platen b comprises the steps of supporting a liner f in the bore, applying axial pressure to the lines to tighten the liner against the column and the wall of the bore mounting are the press means to retain the liner in the stressed condition after removal of the axial pressure, and then removing the axial pressure from the liner whilst leaving the retaining means in position. The liner may consist of a number of soft brass rings f or segments which are supported on a shoulder d on the column and are radially extended into engagement with the column and a steel bush g, which is shrunk into the bore c, by axial pressure transmitted from the ram or rams of the press and the cross-head to the liner by a split tubular distance piece h and a gland ring i. While the pressure is applied to tension the column and compress the liner, screws l in a clamping ring j abutting a collar k on the colunm are axially adjusted to bear against the gland ring and retain the liner under compression where the cross-head is raised and the distance piece h removed. In another embodiment, a toughened brass liner m, Fig. 2, is internally tapered to engage a correspondingly tapered portion on the column and retained under compression by screws l in a split nut h. A " backnut " may be provided if the column is prestressed. In a further embodiment, the outer surface of the liner is tapered and engages a corresponding taper on the bush in the bore, the inner surface of the liner engaging a steel bush on the column; the steel bush may have a hardened surface to permit relative movement of the column if the column is not pre-stressed. The means for rooting the column may be provided on the outer wall of the platen.
