Abstract

[Also in Divisions B4 and F2] The inner race of a roller bearing is mounted on, or dismounted from, its frusto-conical seat 2 on a shaft 1, by means of an annular internally stepped member 6 which co-operates with an annular externally stepped member 7 held axially by a spacer 12 and locking nut 13, to define a pressure-tight annular chamber 8 into which oil or grease may be introduced under pressure to force the member 6 axially against the inner race moving it along its seat, friction between the ring 7 and shaft 1 being at least a substantial proportion of the axial force exerted by the hydraulic pressure on the inner ring 7 thereby reducing the strain on the locking nut 13. After mounting, the pressure device may be removed and replaced by a spacer sleeve, a thrust bearing and locking nut or only a locking nut. Pressure devices may be provided both to mount and dismount a single bearing. The inner race 2 may be dismounted by hydraulic pressure from conduit 26 communicating with a circumferential groove 27 to press the inner race from its seat. For continuous control of the bearing clearance while being mounted, the outer race is replaced by a gauge (14), Fig. 2 (not shown), known per se.
