Abstract

Mono- and poly - substituted hydrazine derivatives are prepared by reacting compounds of the formula R1R2N.NHR3, where R1, R2 and R3 represent hydrogen or C1-C18 alkyl, C6-C18 aryl, C7-C18 aralkyl or C5-C8 cycloalkyl radicals, with a C1-C18 organic halide chosen from primary alkyl and aralkyl bromides and iodides, and allyl, aralkyl and propargyl chlorides, in the presence of an alkali-metal hydride in an inert organic solvent such as ethylene glycol dimethyl ether. The examples described the preparation of 1,1,2-tri - n - butyl-hydrazine, 1,1-dimethyl-2-n-octyl-hydrazine, 1-benzyl-2,2-dimethyl-hydrazine, 1,1-dimethyl-2-octadecyl-hydrazin (separated from 1-octadecene by-product as the monohydrochloride), and tetra-n-butyl-hydrazine.
